Vrbo Partner Connection: Damage Protection and Insurance Policies

When using the Vrbo Partner connection with Hospitable, what damage protection and insurance do hosts and guests have access to?

Written by Reynir Óli Smárason

When hosts move their Vrbo account to a Partner connection with any property management software (PMS), Vrbo removes access to their damage deposit products; any such deposits must be made through the PMS you use.

Vrbo's Damage Deposit offering

Vrbo natively offers hosts damage-deposit products that help insure them against damage to their property caused by guests.

💡 This is not the same as Airbnb's AirCover, and does not insure hosts for the same amount or even the full amount of the damages!

Vrbo does not offer hosts an automatic insurance policy similar to AirCover.

Vrbo's policy options are:

  • $59 for $1500 coverage

  • $89 for $3000 coverage

  • $119 for $5000 coverage

These are protections that the guest has to pay for at the time of booking.

To replace this, Hospitable offers hosts a few options.

Hospitable's Security Deposit

Hospitable offers a Security Deposit feature, which hosts can use with the Vrbo Partner integration.

Hosts set the deposit amount that the guest must pay two days before check-in.

In the case of damages, the host can claim the deposit.

Hosts are not entitled to more than the security deposit amount, meaning the security deposit only covers damages up to the deposit amount.

Trip, guest damage, and asset insurance offerings

Hospitable offers three insurance products. Each one protects something different, so they don’t replace each other:

  • Trip Insurance protects the guest’s booking against cancellation or interruption. Guests pay for it.

  • Guest Damage Insurance protects each stay against damage caused by guests. Hosts pay for it.

  • Asset Protection covers the property itself, your liability as a host, and your rental income. Hosts buy a policy through Align Insurance Services.

All three are currently available for U.S. properties only.

Trip Insurance

Trip Insurance lets guests protect their booking against cancellation or interruption from events like illness, emergencies, or travel delays. Guests buy it in the Guest Portal, and hosts earn a commission on each policy. It doesn’t cover damage to your property.

Guest Damage Insurance

Guest Damage Insurance is the closest replacement for Vrbo’s damage-deposit products. Hosts pay to insure each stay against guest-caused damage, with contents coverage from $1,500 to $25,000, plus property damage and liability coverage. It’s currently in private pilot.

Asset Protection with Align Insurance Services

Align Insurance Services is an insurance broker owned by Hospitable. It compares property and liability policies built for short-term rentals across more than 30 carriers. This covers the property itself rather than individual stays, and quotes are free.

Vrbo's liability insurance

Vrbo includes a $1 million Liability Insurance programme on every reservation processed through Vrbo checkout, at no extra cost to hosts.

This also applies to reservations made through the Vrbo Partner connection.

This insurance protects hosts against claims made against them.

For example, if a guest is injured at your property and sues you, or a guest leaves a bath running and floods the unit below. It does not cover damage that guests cause to your own property.

💡 This is not the same as Airbnb’s AirCover. AirCover includes damage protection for hosts, while Vrbo’s programme only covers liability.

Vrbo has never automatically insured hosts against guest damage, so moving to a Vrbo Partner connection doesn’t remove any damage cover you had before.

Two things to know:

  • The programme works alongside your own liability policy. If you don’t have one, a 25% deductible applies.

  • Bookings paid outside Vrbo checkout aren’t covered.

FAQs

Do I lose my insurance if I move to Vrbo Partner?

No. Vrbo’s $1M Liability Insurance still applies to reservations made through the Vrbo Partner connection. What you lose is access to Vrbo’s damage-deposit products, which guests paid for at booking. You can replace them with Hospitable’s Security Deposit or Guest Damage Insurance.

Did Vrbo ever cover me for guest damage?

Not automatically. Vrbo’s damage-deposit products were optional, and guests paid for them. Vrbo’s built-in insurance only covers liability claims made against you, such as a guest injury. It has never covered damage guests cause to your property.

Is Vrbo’s Liability Insurance the same as Airbnb’s AirCover?

No. AirCover includes damage protection for hosts. Vrbo’s programme only covers liability: claims made against you for guest injuries or damage to someone else’s property.

What’s the difference between the Security Deposit and Guest Damage Insurance?

With the Security Deposit, the guest pays an amount you set before check-in, and you can claim it if there’s damage. You can’t recover more than the deposit amount. With Guest Damage Insurance, you pay to insure each stay, and coverage can reach $25,000 for contents, plus property damage and liability cover. It’s currently in private pilot.

Does Trip Insurance cover damage to my property?

No. Trip Insurance is bought by guests to protect their booking against cancellation or interruption. It doesn’t cover property damage, but you earn a commission when guests buy it.
