Vrbo Partner Connection: Troubleshooting Connection Issues

How to resolve possible errors or issues when connecting your Vrbo Partner account to Hospitable.

Written by Reynir Óli Smárason

The Vrbo Partner integration uses Vrbo's official API to connect your Vrbo account to Hospitable. The connection flow is stable, but we know hosts can sometimes get stuck during the connection process.

This article walks through the most common issues and how to resolve them.

For the article on how to connect a Vrbo Partner account to Hospitable, see: Vrbo Partner Connection: Connect a Vrbo Account

Advertiser ID/Hospitable ID

Vrbo may ask you for a "Hospitable ID" or "Hospitable User ID". This is what we call the Advertiser ID.

This is generated automatically during the connection process, and you do not need to input it manually into Vrbo.

If you need to find your Hospitable User ID or Advertiser ID, go to:

  • Hospitable > Channel connections

  • Under your Vrbo Partner channel, you will see the Advertiser ID

A screenshot showing where you can find your Advertiser ID or Hospitable ID on the Channel conenctions page in Hospitable.

How To Report A Connectivity Issue to Hospitable

If you encounter any issues during the connection flow, or are otherwise unable to complete it, then you can report this to us from within the connection flow itself.

Screenshot showing the issue reporting button during the Vrbo Partner connection flow.

To report an issue, click the Encountering issues connecting with Vrbo? button and fill out the subsequent report by telling us what went wrong and giving a detailed description of the steps you took and where the connection went wrong.

💡 The more details you can give in your report, the better positioned we are to investigate the issue for you!

Common issues and troubleshooting

The following is a list of some common or known issues that may come up during the upgrade or connection flow, and how to troubleshoot them.

Issue 1: Only the Legacy connection option is available

Symptoms:

You go to connect to Vrbo, and only the Legacy connection method is offered; the Vrbo Partner flow won't open.

Troubleshooting:

Try these steps in order, and check after each one whether the Vrbo Partner option appears:

  1. Hard refresh the page.

    1. Mac: press ⌘ + Shift + R

    2. Windows / Linux: press Ctrl + Shift + R

  2. Clear your browser's cache and cookies for my.hospitable.com, then sign out and sign back in.

  3. Disable browser extensions and turn off any VPN, then reload the page. Ad-blockers and privacy extensions can occasionally hide parts of the Channel Connections page.

  4. Try a different browser or an incognito / private window. If the Vrbo Partner option appears there, the issue was local browser state in your usual browser.

  5. Open the Vrbo Partner connect flow directly using this link:
Make sure you're signed into Hospitable in the same browser.

If you've worked through all of the above and still only see the Legacy option, reach out to support with a screenshot of what you see on the Channel Connections page and the browser you're using, and we'll take a closer look.

Issue 2: There is no “Upgrade” button on my Vrbo Legacy channel, or it’s greyed out.

Symptoms:

You have an existing Vrbo connection, but no Upgrade option appears, or the button is greyed out (you can't click on it).

Troubleshooting:

First, we will try basic troubleshooting steps to eliminate the possibility of browser issues:

If those don't work, we move on to checking for possible reasons why the account cannot be upgraded:

  1. It contains HomeAway listings: These are older generation listings, which Vrbo doesn't communicate through the official API. You are currently not be able to upgrade an account which contains these types of listings. See more here.

  2. It only contains properties in countries which are not supported: Some properties cannot be connected to Hospitable on the Vrbo Partner connection because the country they are in is unsupported by the Hospitable Merchant of Record payment method or Stripe. See more here.

  3. You are currently in a queue: The number of hosts who can upgrade to the Vrbo Partner connection each day is currently limited. Check to see if you are in a queue, and when it will be your turn to upgrade. See more here.

💡 If none of these help or answer your questions, please open a ticket with support and make sure to give as much detail as you can. Our AI bot, Smarty, is specially trained to help with this situation!

Issue 3: Vrbo says I am connected to Hospitable, but Hospitable still says “Continue setup”

Symptoms:

You start the upgrade or connection flow on Hospitable and quickly get to a page on Vrbo, which says that you are now successfully connected to Hospitable on the Partner integration, even though you didn't actually go through any connection steps or fill in any information.

When you go back to the Channel connections page on Hospitable, you see that the Vrbo Partner channel isn't connected and still has the "Continue setup" button next to it.

Clicking the button just brings you back to that same page on Vrbo, which says you are already connected.

Troubleshooting:

This is most common for hosts who have previously used a different property management software (PMS) with Vrbo. Even if you've disconnected that PMS from Vrbo, and even if that was a long time ago, this issue can come up.

The issue has to do with your account email address on Vrbo. If you have changed this at any point, then Vrbo may still be stuck trying to use the old email address, which they associate with the old PMS connection.

To fix this:

  1. Open a conversation with Hospitable support, using the chat widget on your account.

  2. Explain the issue; that you click to connect or upgrade and get a page saying it's connected, even though you still see "Continue setup" on Hospitable.

  3. When prompted, share the Advertiser ID for the Vrbo account you are trying to connect to and the email address you use to log into the Vrbo account.

  4. Our AI bot, Smarty, will run an action to reset the correct email address for the account on Vrbo's backend.

  5. Wait for Smarty to confirm the action is done and refresh the Channel connections page.

  6. Retry the connection or upgrade of your Vrbo channel.

If this still doesn't work, Smarty will escalate the conversation to a teammate who will assist you.

Issue 4: Both Vrbo and Hospitable say my account is connected, but some or all of my listings are missing on Hospitable and have disappeared from Vrbo

Symptoms:

You've gone through all of the connection steps on Hospitable and Vrbo, and both platforms say that your Vrbo account is now connected on the Vrbo Partner connection.

However, some or all of your listings are now missing, both on Hospitable and on Vrbo.

Missing listings are archived on Vrbo, and you cannot un-archive them.

Troubleshooting:

Start with some basic troubleshooting:

  1. Confirm the connection is actually complete. Go to the Channel connections page in Hospitable and look at the Vrbo channel card. If it says Continue setup, the connection isn't finished yet — open it and complete the remaining steps (see Issue 1).

  2. Wait a few minutes. Once the connection is complete, Vrbo needs a short amount of time to push your listing data through. Refresh the Channel connections page after a few minutes.

  3. Check all of your properties in Hospitable. Your Vrbo listing may have been merged onto an existing Hospitable property rather than added as a new one. Open each property and check whether the Vrbo channel is now connected on it.

If the listings are still missing from your Hospitable and Vrbo account, then continue below.

This can happen if your listings were created on Vrbo before July 2020, when the platform was called HomeAway.

These listings are archived by Vrbo during the connection flow. This is not something which Hospitable controls or can override.

You will need to recreate those listings from your properties on Hospitable. Once you've done that, Hospitable support can help you get the reviews moved from your old listing to your new one.

See more about HomeAway listings and how to recreate them on Hospitable here: HomeAway Listings and the Vrbo Partner Connection

Issue 5: Vrbo shows an “Internal server error” when I try to input my payment details

Symptoms:

During the upgrade or connection flow, you get to a page on Vrbo which asks you to input your credit card and payment details for the Vrbo commission fee.

While on that page, you get an error which says "Internal server error" and you are either unable to fill in the fields on the page or unable to press "Continue".

A Vrbo onboarding page asking which credit card to use for commissions, with a red "Internal service error" banner at the top of the form.

Troubleshooting:

This is a known server error on Vrbo.

Unfortunately, it's not something that Hospitable can fix or resolve on our end.

To fix this, first try these basic troubleshooting steps:

  1. Refresh the page and try saving the card again. In some cases, the error clears on the next attempt.

  2. Sign out of Vrbo and sign back in, then restart the Vrbo Partner flow from the Open Self-Service onboarding in Vrbo link in Hospitable and re-enter the card details.

  3. Disable any ad-blocker or privacy extensions in your browser and reload the page, in case they are interfering with Vrbo's checkout form.

  4. Try a different browser, or an incognito/private window with no extensions, and re-enter the card details.

  5. Double-check the card details before saving — expiry date, billing address, and that the card is enabled for international/online payments. If you have a previous card stored on the legacy Vrbo account, try a different card.

If that doesn't work, then we move on to contacting Vrbo for help:

  1. Call Vrbo for support. You can reach out to Vrbo directly and ask for help. Tell them about the internal server error message on their site, and ask them to fix it for you.

  2. Reach out to Hospitable support and explain the issue. We will also reach out to Vrbo on your behalf and ask them to fix the issue.

📞 Vrbo support phone number: +1 877-239-2592

In the meantime, you can keep listing on Vrbo through the legacy Vrbo connection in Hospitable:

  • If you already had a working legacy (Chrome-extension based) Vrbo connection before starting the Vrbo Partner flow, that connection is unaffected by this error and will continue to sync your existing Vrbo listings as before. You can keep using it while Vrbo resolves this issue.

  • If you are connecting a new Vrbo account and get stuck on this error during the Vrbo Partner flow, we recommend connecting via the legacy Vrbo connection for now (if it's available on your account) and revisiting the Vrbo Partner upgrade once Vrbo's fix is in place.
See more here: Vrbo Legacy Connection: How to Connect Vrbo to Hospitable

  • Do not try to remove or disconnect the pending Partner connection! This can cause your listing to become unlisted or hidden on Vrbo. Instead, leave the connection pending until the issue is resolved.

Issue 6: I received a “Failed” message when I tried to connect my account

Symptoms:

You went through the connection flow and received some sort of failure error message, or now your channel shows a failure message on the Channel connections page on Hospitable.

Troubleshooting:

A connection is most likely to fail in this way if you make any changes to your Vrbo account after having started the connection process on Hospitable.

For example:

  • You started the connection process on Hospitable.

  • You didn't complete the process yet.

  • You went to your Vrbo profile, and you archived one of your listings.

Making this sort of change, after the connection flow had been started, confuses things on Vrbo's end, and they aren't able to complete the migration or connection.

Other examples of changes that throw the connection off are:

  • Changing your account's email address.

  • Changing any other details on your account.

  • Creating a new listing on Vrbo after starting the connection process.

  • Any other changes to your Vrbo account.

To fix this:

  • Contact Hospitable support.

  • Share all details of the changes you made to your Vrbo account.

  • Reverse the change that you made; if you archived a listing, un-archive it. If you created a new one, archive it.

  • Wait for Smarty to reset the connection attempt for you.

  • Retry the connection.

If these steps don't work, a Hospitable teammate will raise the issue for you with Vrbo.

Issue 7: Vrbo page doesn’t load when I start the connection flow

Symptoms:

You click on the "Connect Vrbo", "Upgrade", or "Continue setup" button on the Channel connections page on Hospitable, which opens up a page on Vrbo which doesn't load.

The page either just keeps loading and nothing happens, or you see an error message.

Troubleshooting:

Let's try some basic steps first:

  • Hard refresh the page.

    1. Mac: press ⌘ + Shift + R

    2. Windows / Linux: press Ctrl + Shift + R

  • Clear your browser's cache and cookies for my.hospitable.com, then sign out and sign back in.

  • Disable browser extensions and turn off any VPN, then reload the page. Ad-blockers and privacy extensions can occasionally hide parts of the Channel Connections page.

  • Try a different browser or an incognito / private window. If the Vrbo Partner option appears there, the issue was local browser state in your usual browser.

If those steps don't work, and you see a specific error message on the Vrbo page (such as a "HTTP" error, "504", or "2FA dead-end"), contact Vrbo support directly for help with clearing the error.

This is an issue on their page, which Hospitable is unable to fix.

  • Call Vrbo for support. You can reach out to Vrbo directly and ask for help. Tell them about the internal server error message on their site, and ask them to fix it for you.

  • Reach out to Hospitable support and explain the issue. We will also reach out to Vrbo on your behalf and ask them to fix the issue.

Issue 8: Vrbo is asking me for a VAT number

Symptoms:

During the connection or upgrading flow, Vrbo asks you for a VAT number, and you are not able to get past this page without providing one.

Troubleshooting:

When connecting through the Vrbo Partner integration, Vrbo signs you in and then checks your account against its own regional requirements. Hosts in some regions — most commonly parts of the EU — may see a Vrbo screen asking for a VAT number, tax registration, or other compliance documents before the connection can finish.

ℹ️ See full list of countries and VAT requirements here: Vrbo Partner Connection: VAT / Tax IDs required by country

🚨 This requirement comes from Vrbo, not from Hospitable. Vrbo decides which documents are required based on where your account is registered. Hospitable can't waive, change, or skip this step on your behalf, and we don't have a list of which countries are affected.

If you don't have the documents Vrbo is asking for, the connection won't be able to move past Vrbo's sign-in step. In Hospitable, the Vrbo channel will stay on Continue setup indefinitely.

What to do:

  1. Have the documents ready before retrying. If Vrbo asks for a VAT number or tax registration, locate the official number from your local tax authority. Vrbo will not accept placeholder values.

  2. Restart the connection flow once you have them. In Hospitable, go to the Channel connections page, open the pending Vrbo channel, and click Continue setup to return to the Vrbo onboarding page. Enter the requested information there.

  3. If Vrbo's screen is unclear or rejects your information, contact Vrbo directly. Vrbo's support team can confirm exactly which documents your account needs and can usually resolve documentation issues faster than going through Hospitable, because the requirement lives on their side.

  4. Once Vrbo confirms your account is good to go, return to Hospitable and click Continue setup on the Vrbo channel one more time to finish the connection.

📞 Vrbo support phone number: +1 877-239-2592

If you can't provide the documents Vrbo requires

If your account can't meet Vrbo's documentation requirements, you won't be able to use the Vrbo Partner integration at this time. You can continue managing that Vrbo account on the Vrbo Legacy connection until your situation changes.

Issue 9: Vrbo says there is no “Advertiser ID” for the channel

Symptoms:

During the onboarding or upgrading flow, you see a message on Vrbo saying the software you are trying to connect is missing an "Advertiser ID". It could also be that you've contacted Vrbo support about some connection issue, and they told you this.

Troubleshooting:

First, check the Channel connections page to see if the Vrbo Partner channel you were trying to connect actually has an Advertiser ID or not.

If the channel does have an Advertiser ID:

  • Open a conversation with Hospitable support.

  • Explain the issue to Smarty, which is that Vrbo is saying you don't have an advertiser ID, but the channel does have one.

  • Most likely, the issue has to do with the email address on the Vrbo account being stored incorrectly on Vrbo.

  • Share the email address that you use to log into that account with Smarty.

  • After Smarty runs some actions to fix this, you can try the connection again.

If the channel does not have an Advertiser ID:

  • Open a conversation with Hospitable support.

  • Explain to Smarty that the Vrbo channel you are trying to connect does not have an advertiser ID.

  • Smarty will escalate that to a teammate, who can raise that directly with Vrbo and provide you with an update once fixed.

Issue 10: I connected a Vrbo Partner account, but my properties on Hospitable aren't showing up on Vrbo

Symptoms:

You connected your Vrbo Partner channel to Hospitable, or created a new one via Hospitable and expected your existing properties on Hospitable to be recreated on Vrbo (that Hospitable would automatically create Vrbo listings for you pre-existing properties on Hospitable).

Troubleshooting:

This is not how the connection works; Hospitable never automatically creates listings for you.

You will need to manually create those listings from within your properties on Hospitable. This only takes a moment for each listing!

See full instructions on how to create those listings here: Create a Vrbo Partner Listing on Hospitable

Issue 11: I can't create Vrbo Partner listings from my property on Hospitable

Symptoms:

You have successfully connected, created, or upgraded your Vrbo channel on the Vrbo Partner connection, but you're still not able to create Vrbo listings from within your properties on Hospitable.

Troubleshooting:

To create a Vrbo listing from Hospitable, the following must be in place:

  • Your property must have a listed Airbnb listing on it.

  • You must have received at least three reviews on any other booking platform.

  • You must have a Vrbo Partner account connected to Hospitable.

  • You must have a bank account added or Stripe connected to your Hospitable account for payment processing.

  • Your property must have a valid address set.

  • Your property must have at least 6 photos uploaded.

  • Your property must have amenities configured.

  • Your property must not already have a Vrbo listing attached to it.

  • Your Vrbo account must have a credit card on file, from which Vrbo can charge their 5% commission.

After creating a listing, Vrbo may take a few minutes to process it. During this time, the listing may temporarily show as "Expired" on Vrbo's end — this is normal. Hospitable will turn your listing live again once Vrbo finishes processing.

If your listing still doesn't appear after 30 minutes, contact Hospitable support.

Issue 12: My Vrbo listing won't go live ("missing licensing information")

Symptoms:

You've finished connecting to Vrbo through the Vrbo Partner integration but one or more of your listings won't publish on Vrbo.

Troubleshooting:

The most common cause is that Vrbo requires licensing or registration information for your listing's location that hasn't been added yet.

Depending on where your property is located, Vrbo may require things like:

  • A short-term rental permit or registration number

  • A local tax ID or business license number

  • A tourism authority registration

Vrbo requires this information for listings in many regions before they can go live. If your listing was previously published on another channel where you'd already registered this info, Hospitable can usually pull it across, so you don't need to re-enter it. If you're seeing the prompt below, it means we don't yet have valid licensing info on file for this listing.

How to fix it:

You can add or update licensing information for your Vrbo listing directly from Hospitable — you don't need to log into Vrbo separately.

  1. In Hospitable, open the affected property.

  2. Go to Details > Licensing.

  3. Under Vrbo Partner Connections, click the Configure registration button.

  4. Enter the licensing or registration details required by your jurisdiction. Make sure the format matches what your local authority requires (number, expiry date if applicable, etc.).

  5. Save your changes.

  6. Wait a few minutes — Hospitable will automatically retry publishing the listing on Vrbo with the updated info.

  7. Refresh your listing in Hospitable and on Vrbo to confirm it has gone live.

    1. Set your listing live on Hospitable if it still isn't.

A screenshot showing where to find the "Configure registration" button on your property's Details page.

Issue 13: A property with an existing Vrbo Partner listing still shows the option to create a new Vrbo listing

Symptoms:

On a property that already has a Vrbo Partner listing connected, you can still see the Create a new Vrbo listing prompt — and starting that flow may complete without the normal check that requires a published Airbnb listing on the property.

This is a known issue.

How to identify it:

  • Your property in Hospitable already has a Vrbo Partner listing connected (it may be Listed or Unlisted).

  • The Airbnb listing on the same property is unlisted, draft, or otherwise not currently published.

  • The property page still shows a Create a new Vrbo listing entry point as if no Vrbo listing existed.

  • Starting the Create a new Vrbo listing flow does not block you with the usual "you need a published Airbnb listing first" check.

Troubleshooting:

  1. 🚨 Don't proceed with the second Vrbo listing creation. Close the flow if you have already started it.

  2. Confirm the existing Vrbo Partner listing is the one you want by opening the property in Hospitable and checking the Vrbo Partner channel card.

  3. If the existing Vrbo listing is the right one but is currently unlisted, list it again from Hospitable instead of creating a new one. See the Listing Status After Connection section of Vrbo Partner Connection: Overview for what to expect.

  4. If you intended to replace the existing Vrbo listing (rather than add a second one), contact Hospitable Support before doing anything else — disconnecting a Vrbo Partner listing can affect your Vrbo account and listing standing. See Vrbo Partner Connection: Disconnecting Your Listings.

A Hospitable property page that already has a Vrbo Partner listing connected, but still shows the option to create a new Vrbo listing.

If you've already created a second Vrbo listing on the same property:

If you went through the flow and now have two Vrbo entries (the original Partner listing plus a newly-created one) on the same property, contact Hospitable Support with:

  • Your Vrbo Advertiser ID (from Hospitable → Channel connections).

  • The Hospitable property ID or property name.

  • The Vrbo listing IDs of both the original and the newly-created listing.

We'll work with Vrbo to clean up the duplicate so you don't end up with two listings competing for the same property.

Issue 14: My Vrbo listing didn't pick up the details I had set in Hospitable after upgrading or merging

Symptoms:

The property details on Hospitable are different to the listing details on Vrbo. You recently upgraded to the Vrbo Partner connection, and expected Hospitable to push out the property details to Vrbo and update them there.

Troubleshooting:

This is expected. Connecting, upgrading, or merging a Vrbo listing into Hospitable does not push your Hospitable listing details (title, description, photos, fees, amenities, etc.) to Vrbo.

Your Vrbo listing keeps whatever it had on Vrbo at the time of connection, and Hospitable pulls those values down. Where Hospitable's and Vrbo's values differ, Hospitable creates a per-channel override for Vrbo so each channel can keep its own version of the data.

To make Hospitable's values show on Vrbo: open the affected fields on the property's Details page in Hospitable, edit and save them. Once saved in Hospitable's UI, those values are pushed to Vrbo on the normal sync.

FAQs

Can I move my Vrbo Partner connection from one Hospitable account to another?

No. It is currently not possible to move the connection of a Vrbo Partner account from one Hospitable account to another.

To do this would involve the need to disconnect the Vrbo account from the current Hospitable account.

⚠️ Do not disconnect your Vrbo Partner account from Hospitable!

Disconnecting a Partner connection causes significant damage to the account and listings on Vrbo!

You can read more about that here: Vrbo Partner Connection: Disconnecting Your Listings

Consult Hospitable Support for help if you need to migrate your channel.
