Vrbo: Overview

How the Vrbo integration works, what is synced between Hospitable and Vrbo, and some limitations of the connection.

The Vrbo integration explained

Hospitable connects with Vrbo through Vrbo’s public API. This is different to Hospitable’s integration with Airbnb and Booking.com, which is through their official APIs. We are currently working with Vrbo on an official API integration.

How do I connect or reconnect to Vrbo?

Connections to Vrbo are made through our Chrome extension. You can find the detailed connection and reconnection steps here.

What limitations come with using the public API?

Connecting to Vrbo through their public API comes with certain limitations that are not present on Airbnb and Booking.com.

For example, because we don’t have an official integration with Vrbo, we cannot control certain settings and features like:

  • Listing name

  • Listing description

  • Reservation alterations or cancellations

  • Calendar settings, such as:

    • Minimum stay length setting

    • Booking window setting

  • Listing fees, such as:

    • Cleaning fees

    • Pet fees

    • Community charges

These are just a few examples.

In short, Hospitable will only send calendar data (not settings) to your Vrbo listing. These are:

  • Calendar availability

  • Calendar pricing

  • Calendar minimum stay length

  • Calendar check-in and check-out restrictions

Messaging on Vrbo

Hospitable supports automated messaging for your Vrbo guests, but because the unofficial Vrbo integration uses a public API rather than an official integration, messaging works a bit differently than on Airbnb or Booking.com. Vrbo listings are partially managed — this means Hospitable can read and respond to messages and manage your calendar, but does not have the same level of control as a full connection. This means your automated messages will work for most scenarios, but some message types may be restricted by Vrbo. *Note: this will change with the Vrbo official integration release.

What's supported:

  • Automated messages — Scheduled messages, check-in instructions, review reminders, and other messaging rules will fire for Vrbo reservations just like they do for other channels.

  • Manual replies — You can reply to Vrbo guest messages directly from your Hospitable inbox.

What's not supported:

  • Pre-booking inquiry messages containing links — Vrbo's content filters block most messages that include URLs sent before a reservation is confirmed. If your messaging rule sends a link (e.g., a guidebook or rental agreement) to a pre-booking inquiry, the message is likely to be silently rejected by Vrbo. Move link-containing messages to a post-booking trigger to avoid this.

Content filter restrictions

Vrbo applies automated content filters to messages sent through their platform. Messages that contain certain keywords, external links, or contact information may be blocked without notification. If a message fails to deliver, check whether the content might trigger Vrbo's filters. For more details and troubleshooting steps, see Troubleshooting: Automated Message Was Not Sent Or Not Scheduled.

Expected delivery times

Hospitable detects new Vrbo guest messages within approximately 2–3 minutes. Automated replies are sent shortly after detection. If a message doesn't appear to have been delivered, allow a few minutes before troubleshooting.

Is it possible to create a Vrbo listing from Hospitable?

It is not yet possible to create a Vrbo listing directly from Hospitable, as is the case with Airbnb and Booking.com. New listings need to be created directly on Vrbo and pulled into Hospitable.

Creating a listing on Vrbo from Hospitable will become available with the official Vrbo integration.

Will Hospitable ever have an official integration with Vrbo?

Yes! We are actively working with Vrbo on building an official integration with them, just like the ones we have with Airbnb and Booking.com.

The official integration will allow us to be the ultimate source of truth for your listing description, settings, and calendar, just like we are for Airbnb and Booking.com!

This will allow hosts to control all of their listings in one place.

While we don’t yet have a date for when this work will be completed, you can track progress and subscribe to updates here: https://feedback.hospitable.com/p/vrbo-official

Limitations When Creating Manual Bookings on Vrbo

Vrbo supports manually adding reservations requested outside of their platform to the Vrbo calendar to facilitate the processing of their payments via Vrbo. However, some restrictions apply, which means Hospitable is not able to guarantee full support for such reservations.

Manually created reservations on Vrbo are not similar to reservations that are booked by a guest through the Vrbo website. What this means for us is that the data they share through their API from the manual booking is not as complete as it is for Vrbo-generated reservations.

This can sometimes lead to unexpected results, such as reservation updates not reflecting on our product. If that is the case, we recommend that you reach out to our support team directly and share with us the confirmation code for this reservation (typically starting with HA-)

Alternatively, we suggest adding manual reservations directly through Hospitable.

How do I connect a Vrbo channel?

You can connect your Vrbo channel and listings to Hospitable by going through the connection process on Hospitable > Connected accounts > Connect with Vrbo.

You can read the full connection instructions here.

Vrbo’s limitations when connected to another property management software

Vrbo’s API does not allow us to read or edit the Vrbo calendar when another property management software (PMS), such as Guesty or Hostfully, is used with your Vrbo account.

If you are using a PMS on Vrbo, Hospitable will still be able to pull in new reservations from Vrbo and manage automated messaging.

Vrbo only restricts and limits access to their calendar when you use another PMS.

You can read more here.

What happens if Vrbo is the lead listing on a property?

When Vrbo is the lead listing on your property, Sync settings become relevant to your property and calendar.

When the Vrbo listing is the lead listing on your property, Hospitable checks the Vrbo calendar on a rolling 4.5-hourly basis to check for changes made on your Vrbo calendar, if Hospitable detects availability, pricing, or minimum stay lengths that are different to the values on the Hospitable calendar, we will pull in the values from the Vrbo calendar and push those to the other listings on the property if the relevant sub-sync setting is enabled.

The sub-sync settings are:

  • Availability sync

  • Pricing sync

  • Minimum night stay sync

If we detect different pricing on your Vrbo calendar, when Vrbo is your lead listing, for example, but Pricing sync is not enabled on your account, then we will not push the pricing from your Vrbo listing over to your other listings right away.

We will only update those other calendars during the 24-hourly full sync that we do with your Airbnb and Booking.com calendars.

Safety

Security is paramount to our business, as it is for yours. We have designed a system that protects your booking channel credentials, which we have detailed on our data security page.

If needed, it is always possible to void the access token by changing your password directly on the booking channel.
